When I first landed in Hong Kong, I honestly had no idea what to expect. In my head, I pictured a chaotic city packed with rushed businesspeople, overcrowded metro trains, and an endless concrete jungle. As for things to do in Hong Kong? I had no clue.

What I discovered instead completely surprised me.

Hong Kong is an incredibly beautiful and diverse city. Beyond the reputation for crowds and pollution, the city is clean, well-organized, and surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. Even more surprising? The pace of life felt calmer than expected. People weren't rushing, doors were held open, and the stereotypes I once had disappeared almost instantly.

What truly blew me away, though, was just how many amazing things there are to do in Hong Kong. During my six days there, I was constantly on the move trying to see it all — and I still left feeling like I barely scratched the surface. From panoramic viewpoints and lush gardens to coastal hikes and world-class food, planning a Hong Kong itinerary is anything but easy.

Below are my top things to do in Hong Kong, in no particular order.

Take the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak
4

This is hands down one of the most iconic things to do in Hong Kong — and for good reason. Riding the Peak Tram takes you up to Victoria Peak, where you're rewarded with the best panoramic view of Hong Kong's skyline.

At the top, you'll find:

A 360-degree Sky Terrace

Restaurants and souvenir shops

Madame Tussauds Hong Kong

🌅 Best Time to Visit

I wanted to experience the view both during daylight and after dark, so heading up around 4:00 pm was perfect. This timing lets you enjoy the city in daylight and then watch it transform as the skyline lights up at night.

⚠️ Crowds are real, though — this is Hong Kong's most popular attraction.

Sunset visit: Allow 90 minutes to queue and reach the top

Daytime visit: Around 45 minutes is usually enough

Expect long waits on the way down, too — patience required!

🚇 Getting There

Take the MTR to Central Station (Red Line)

Walk about 10 minutes to the Peak Tram station

💡 Travel tip: Download Maps.me and save Hong Kong offline — it's a lifesaver when navigating on foot.

💰 Cost

Peak Tram return ticket: HK$45

Sky Terrace access: HK$45

👉 Total: HK$90
Absolutely worth it — the Sky Terrace offers the best viewpoint in the city.

✅ Useful Tips

Bring a light jacket — it gets windy and cool at night

Food at the Peak is pricey, so bring snacks if you're on a budget

Do not lose your ticket — it's used for entry, terrace access, and the return tram

Visit on a clear day for the best views

If there's one thing Hong Kong does exceptionally well, it's food.

From traditional Cantonese dishes and dim sum to street food that's equal parts delicious and daring, exploring Hong Kong's food scene is an absolute must. For me, a guided food tour was one of the highlights of my trip — and easily my favorite experience on this list.

A food tour lets you:

Taste dishes you'd never order on your own

Learn the cultural stories behind the food

Discover hidden local eateries

Eat a lot without the guesswork 😄

No trip to Hong Kong feels complete without diving headfirst into its food culture — weird, wonderful, and unforgettable.
